Japanese Design Aesthetics

Wabi-sabi, ma, and other concepts I keep returning to.

A few Japanese aesthetic concepts that influence how I think about design:

Wabi-sabi (侘寂) — beauty in imperfection and impermanence. A cracked ceramic bowl is more beautiful than a perfect one. Applies to digital design too: slight texture, organic shapes, warmth over clinical precision.

Ma (間) — negative space, the pause between. Not emptiness but pregnant emptiness. White space isn't wasted space.

Kanso (簡素) — simplicity, elimination of clutter. Not minimalism for its own sake but clarity through reduction.
