Learning in Public
Notes on the practice of sharing what you learn as you learn it
Learning in public is the practice of sharing your learning journey openly, including the mistakes and uncertainties.
Why It Works
When you learn in public, you:
- Solidify understanding through explanation
- Create resources for others on the same path
- Build a network of people interested in similar things
- Create opportunities for feedback and correction
The Uncomfortable Part
It feels vulnerable to share things you don't fully understand. There's fear of:
- Looking stupid
- Being wrong
- Being criticized
But these fears are usually overblown. Most people are supportive of learners.
How to Start
- Write about concepts you're currently learning
- Share your confusion honestly
- Update your notes as understanding grows
- Don't wait until you're an expert
